Males Wrestling – from Ancient Egypt till Our Times

Wrestling is the world's oldest sports. Its history goes back to ancient Egyptian times. Wrestling was increasing in popularity as it made its way to America. The first national wrestling tournament took place in New York in 1988.

The majority of professional wrestlers are men. The famous names include Andr? the Giant, The Big Show, Batista, The Undertaker, Yokozuna, Brock Lesnar, Kane, The Great Khali and Hulk Hogan and others. Contests or divisions are usually set up for men of similar wrestling styles, like brawling, technical, high flying, lucha. However, competitions involving different weight divisions are frequently organized as well.

Male vs Female Wrestling

Mixed matches have been held throughout the history of wrestling. For instance, in Sparta it was normal for girls to be engaged in contests with boys of a similar weight. Athens and the rest of the Greece did not favour this type of sport, but Sparta encouraged it. Later, at the Roman arena, mixed matches became a common thing.

In more modern times, the 1950s, there was the rise of the modern mixed tag match in the southern states of the USA. The format of this is two teams, each consisting of a man and a woman wrestler competing with each other. According to the rules, the contest is started by the two men and once a tag is made, both participants are replaced by their partners. Though the original idea was like that, it often failed in practise, and in the result there was male vs female.

The popularity of mixed tag grew with the spread of women's right to wrestle in public. With the disappearance of female wrestling in the big U.S. promotions the mixed tag has gone too.
